How Sabrina the Teenage Witch's Aunt Hilda Predated Sabrina By Months!

In Abandoned an' Forsaked, we examine comic book stories and ideas that were not only abandoned, but also had the stories/plots specifically "overturned" by a later writer (as if they were a legal precedent).

Today, we look at how Hilda the Witch actually predated Sabrina and eventually was retconned into becoming her aunt!

Hilda the Witch debuted in Archie's Mad House #19, an odd anthology series by Archie that would have all sorts of different types of stories in them, to the point where they determined that they needed a host for their horror section, since horror hosts were common at the time...

Bob White created the character. She had a brief one-page story...

and then she would introduce the next story...

This continued for the next couple of issues...

Then, in Archie's Mad House #22, George Gladir and Dan DeCarlo introduced a new kind of witch, Sabrina the Teenage Witch!

She had no aunt or any parental figure, just a head witch, Della, that she reported to...

Occasionally, Hilda and Sabrina would even interact with each other, but not as aunt and niece, but just as two witches...

In Archie's Mad House #28, Gladir and DeCarlo finally gave Sabrina a parental figure, but she was Greta the Fairy Witch Mother...

It would not be until Archie's Mad House #37 that Hilda was merged into the Greta role and officially became Sabrina's Aunt Hilda...

That has been the set-up ever since.

I hesitate a bit to necessarily call this a retcon, as I guess we didn't explicitly know that Hilda WASN'T Sabrina's aunt in the earlier stories, but, well, come on, it's still pretty clearly a retcon, right?
