The Riverdale universe is getting a little bigger, and a little bit more magical, though it’s no longer confined to a single network. The CW has revealed that the spinoff series focused on Sabrina, the Teenage Witch has been picked up for two seasons, but instead of being on The CW alongside Archie Andrews and his pals, her show will be a Netflix Original Series. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who serves as showrunner for Sabrina‘s predecessor, will write the pilot for the new show.
Sabrina was originally planned for a 2018-2019 schedule for the CW as a companion piece to Riverdale. As its own Netflix series, the show will have two 10-episode seasons right out the gate, with shooting for the first season beginning this February and scheduled to end in June. The second season will then be shot from June to October. A premiere date for the overall series, along with a rollout plan for the show, has yet to be revealed by Netflix.
Just as Riverdale is a darker take on the classic comics series, Sabrina will do the same for everyone’s favorite witch. This’ll be a coming of age tale dealing with horror and the occult as Sabrina must contend with being half-human and half-witch. And of course, she’ll have to fight dark magical forces that threaten the world, as all teenagers do.
