Sabrina: Audition Tape Suggests Diverse Lead Eyed for Riverdale Spinoff

A new audition video for the CW's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has surfaced, confirming a previous report that stated the network is open to casting an actress of any ethnicity so long as they're able to pass as a sixteen year old.

Much like the first audition tape that surfaced featuring Australian actress Maggie McKenna (Muriel’s Wedding the Musical), the latest audition tape sees actress Ashley Chiu reading as Sabrina as she leads an off-screen Harvey into the woods to explain how she will be reborn upon her sixteenth birthday. The second half of the video shows Chiu's Sabrina talking to an off-screen Agatha and Prudence about possibly attending the Academy of the Invisible Arts.

Chiu is the latest actress to have auditioned for the lead role, joining McKenna, Charlie Torr, Ariel Kaplan, Bekka Walker, Adelina Hudson, and Julia Rehwald. Typically, when this many audition videos begin to surface, casting news isn't too far off, so we could finally learn who our new Sabrina is relatively soon.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is based on the Archie Comics title of the same name. The comic is by Aguirre-Sacasa and artist Robert Hack and re-imagines Sabrina the Teenage Witch in a dark coming-of-age story that has drawn comparisons to such films as Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist.

While Chilling Adventures of Sabrina doesn’t have an official release date, it’s planned to debut during the 2018-19 television season as a companion to Riverdale, which is currently airing its second season on the CW.
