While Disney's accumulation of 20th Century Fox (now known as 20th Century Studios) properties means that Deadpool can legally enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Ryan Reynolds still doesn't know when that will officially happen.

As part of an exposé on Reynolds by Fast Company, the Deadpool actor was asked when fans could expect their favorite ultra-violent Merc with a Mouth to return to the big screen, preferably alongside the Avengers. Reynolds replied with a sincere response: "I don't know. Obviously, everything is on pause right now."

Deadpool released in 2016 to positive reviews — two years after test footage of a Deadpool movie "leaked" on YouTube — with Reynolds' performance as the titular character receiving critical acclaim. The film and its 2018 sequel Deadpool 2 became the highest-grossing R-rated films of all time until the release of 2019's Joker, breaking a stigma that moviegoers would be turned off by a mainstream R-rated comic book movie. Reynolds has confirmed that Marvel Studios is developing a Deadpool 3, though no release or production dates have been announced.

Reynolds next film is the upcoming action-comedy Free Guy, in which he plays an open-world game NPC who becomes self-aware about his role as a gaming program. The film is scheduled to release on Dec. 11.
