Deadpool 3 star Ryan Reynolds shares a humorous revelation about how long he's wanted to see the Merc with the Mouth team up with Wolverine.

Soon to be the recipient of the American Cinematheque Award on Nov. 17, Reynolds sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to reflect on his career and his excitement to join forces with his friend Hugh Jackman as the iconic mutant in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel. When asked how long he's wanted the X-Men star to reprise his role, Reynolds' response was more than a little revealing. "I’ve wanted this to happen since the day my mother and father finished a box of chardonnay and checked into that Holiday Inn Express to produce a child [me]," Reynolds said.

Reynolds and Jackman first shared the screen in 2009's critically panned X-Men Origins: Wolverine which was Wade Wilson's first depiction on film. In 2016, Reynolds headlined the widely successful Deadpool movie and followed it up with the sequel Deadpool 2 in 2018. The actor made numerous attempts to convince Jackman to play his star-making role in both movies with no success due to his swan song in 2017's Logan.

In 2019, Disney purchased Fox and retained all the Marvel licenses under the studio, including X-Men and Deadpool. With plans to continue both franchises under the MCU banner, Reynolds envisioned a buddy picture for the third Deadpool installment and "pleaded" with Jackman for years to take part in it until he finally said yes. "Oh my God, I'm thrilled It's like old home week," Reynolds said. "To get to be on set with one of my closest friends each and every day is a dream come true. But to do it with these two iconic characters side by side, that's beyond our wildest dreams."

In September 2022, Marvel Studios officially announced Deadpool 3 with a video confirming the release date and unveiling Jackman's return. While the actors are keeping the plot details under wraps, Jackman promises to give MCU fans a grumpier, angrier version of Wolverine. "There’s no choice. He’s definitely the angrier, acerbic, grumpy. And he’s going to take a lot of free shots at Ryan Reynolds -- physically, that is," Jackman explained.

Directed by Shawn Levy and written by the team of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, Deadpool 3 is currently scheduled to premiere on Nov. 8, 2024.
