At yesterday's Disney Investor Day 2020 presentation, the company announced several release dates for its upcoming film lineup, which included the return of its Ryan Reynolds-starring film Free Guy to Disney’s release schedule.

The video game film’s release date had previously been delayed indefinitely, but Disney has now announced the film is tentatively scheduled to release in theaters on Aug. 13, 2021. It was originally scheduled to premiere on Jul. 30, 2020, but was pushed back until December due to the COVID-19 pandemic before being removed from Disney’s 2020 theatrical calendar entirely.

Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds as Guy, a bank teller who finds he is actually a non-player character (NPC) in an open world video game. Upon his discovery, Guy embarks on a quest to become a hero and save his world before the game developers shut off the servers. Reynolds said in a Zoom interview in October that "it’s…the best movie I’ve ever done."

Another film placed back on Disney’s release calendar is Kenneth Branagh’s murder mystery film Death on the Nile. The movie, based on Agatha Christie’s novel of the same name, had been delayed indefinitely along with Free Guy. Disney announced yesterday that the film will open on Sept. 12, 2021, depending on the state of the pandemic at that time.

Many of Disney’s other upcoming releases received new dates at the presentation yesterday. Among them were the upcoming Marvel films Thor: Love and Thunder and Black Panther 2, which will premiere on May 6, 2022 and Jul. 8, 2022, respectively. President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige mentioned, along with the new date, that Black Panther 2 would not recast the title character after star Chadwick Boseman’s unexpected death.

It is now scheduled to premiere on Sep. 12, 2021.

Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn, Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Taika Waititi. The film arrives in theaters on Aug. 13, 2021.
