According to Ryan Reynolds, his Deadpool 3 training is really about going head-to-head with Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman.

Reynolds' personal trainer, Don Saladino, shared an image of the actor training for his upcoming role in Marvel Studios' Deadpool 3. Sharing the photo on his Instagram story, Reynolds wrote, "I'm not training for Deadpool. I'm training to spend several months with [Hugh Jackman] -- who's not nearly as nice as everyone thinks."

Reynolds began training for his return as Wade Wilson in Deadpool 3 in August 2022. As for Jackman, it wasn't revealed until September of that same year that he would return as Wolverine for the third Deadpool film, a character he first portrayed in 2000's X-Men. In a recent interview, Jackman discussed his own preparation for Deadpool 3, saying that his intense workout regimen will last six months.

Hugh Jackman's Wolverine Training

"I've learned you can't rush it. I've learned that it takes time," he said. "So we have six months from when I finish to when I started filming. And I'm not doing any other work. I'm going to be with my family and train. That's going to be my job for six months. And I'm really fit right now. There's one thing that about eight shows a week being on Broadway singing and dancing is I'm fit. So I'm healthy. I have a good place to start. And apologies chickens. Run a mile. Start running now because I'm coming for you."

Jackman last appeared as Wolverine in 2017's Logan, which saw the character's gruesome demise and was understood as the actor's final outing as the famous X-Men. However, according to Reynolds, Deadpool 3 will not interfere with the continuity of Logan. "Logan takes place in 2029," Reynolds said. "Totally separate thing. Logan died in Logan. Not touching that."

What to Expect From Deadpool 3

Though details on the plot of Deadpool 3 remain scarce, director Shawn Levy has explained that a major priority for him and Reynolds is keeping Deadpool "raw, gritty [and] grounded" as he makes his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "The truth is the more digitally CG-heavy a movie is, the longer time you need in post," the director said. "But obviously it's the first Deadpool movie in the MCU. There's going to be no lack of visual effects."

Similarly, Marvel Studios President and Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige has confirmed that, despite taking place in the MCU, Deadpool 3 will retain the R-rating of the previous two films.

Deadpool 3 is set to debut in theaters on Sept. 6, 2024.
