Walt Disney’s potential acquisition of rival studio 20th Century Fox has elicited both excitement and skepticism from fans and Hollywood professionals. As for Deadpool 2 star Ryan Reynolds, though, the sweetest part of the deal appears to be the possibility of a hot and heavy encounter between the Merc with the Mouth and the House of Mouse's eponymous cartoon rodent.
Responding to news of the possible acquisition on Twitter, Reynolds unleashed Wade Wilson's unique brand of crude humor, teasing what few fans would ever think to imagine in the form of "sexual tension between Deadpool and Mickey Mouse."
Time to uncork that explosive sexual tension between Deadpool and Mickey Mouse. https://t.co/iUEXofWpRu— Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) December 6, 2017
Reynolds isn't the first superhero movie mainstay to offer a comical response to the Disney/Fox deal. Earlier today, Chris Evans proposed a buddy comedy movie in the same vein as Planes, Trains and Automobiles starring Captain America and the Human Torch -- roles Evans has played for both Marvel Studios and Fox, respectively.
The potential deal would see Disney acquire Fox’s film and television production assets, leaving the latter company with news, business and sports channels, as well as its Fox broadcast network. According to CNBC, Fox has also been in talks with Comcast, but negotiations with Disney “have progressed significantly.”
The agreement, which would acquire the approval of federal regulators, would include 20th Century Fox film studio, 20th Century Fox Television, FX Networks, and a majority stake in the streaming service Hulu. However, the biggest selling point for many fans is that it would also bring the film and television rights of the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and all related characters under the control of Disney and its subsidiary Marvel Studios.
It shouldn't be long before we learn whether or not 20th Century Fox follows in the footsteps of Marvel and Lucasfilm by joining the greater Walt Disney family. In the meantime, though, fans will still be able to catch Reynold's Merc with a Mouth in Deadpool 2, which also stars T.J. Miller as Weasel, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus, and Karan Soni as Dopinder, joined by franchise newcomers Zazie Beetz as Domino, Josh Brolin as Cable, Julian Dennison in an unknown role, and Jack Kesy as a villain widely thought to be Black Tom Cassidy. The film, directed by David Leitch, hits theaters June 1, 2018.
