While there's been no official update on Deadpool 3 as the franchise transitions into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, star Ryan Reynolds said there's a strong chance that the movie will go into production next year.

Deadpool 3 has been confirmed as joining the MCU, where it will remain an R-rated franchise, and Reynolds is actively developing the project with writers Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin and Wendy Molyneux. The film still doesn't have a director or a confirmed release date, but it could begin shooting next year, according to Reynolds.

"The percentage chance? I don’t know. I couldn’t assign a percentage to that," Reynolds said when Collider asked the percentage chance of Deadpool 3 beginning production next year. "I’d say it’s 50/50 maybe? We’re really actively developing it and getting it into pretty good shape. What the hell month is it? August? Oh, next year? Probably pretty damn good. I’d say 70%."

Though Reynolds started out hesitant to nail anything down, he finished with a fairly confident response. Then again, the off-the-cuff answer should still be taken with a grain of salt. For now, Reynolds and the Molyneux Sisters are just focusing on crafting the script.

"It’s something that is just a daily process," Reynolds said. "Writing is kind of like that, you’ve gotta allot time to do it and walk away, and I’m working with the Molyneuxs on it, it’s been great. They’re incredibly talented and so, so smart. They so understand that world and know how to zig when everyone’s expecting a zag, so it’s been a lot of fun."

While Marvel has 2022 staked out with various releases, there are a number of spots in 2023 that will feature an unnamed film from the studio. If Deadpool 3 begins filming next year, it's likely it will arrive in one of those 2023 slots. But for fans anxious to see the Merc with a Mouth join the MCU, it could happen sooner.

"As long as Disney's open to doing some pretty wildly divergent or having some wildly divergent uses of Deadpool then I dig it, man. I think it's all great," Reynolds said when asked if Deadpool could pop up in another MCU project before his next solo film arrives.
