The world of RWBY contains many faces, not just those of the team that makes up the show’s title. In addition to the titular team RWBY, another team has shared a lot of the series spotlight. That team is formerly known as JNPR. After their loss of Pyrrha Nikos, they’re still figuring out their new team standings.

Led by Jaune Arc, the team also includes Nora Valkyrie and Lie Ren. With her bubbly personality, her electric abilities, and her willingness to stand up for everyone in need, Nora is quite the fascinating character that fans are itching to learn more about. Here are answers to some questions fans might still have about her.

10 What Mythical Figure Inspired Nora

Nora Valkyrie In Volume 1 Of RWBY

All of Nora’s Team JNPR takes inspiration from a specific type of mythic or historic figure: a hero who has had to dress in another gender’s clothes to complete a mission. In the case of Nora, she’s inspired by Asgardian god of thunder Thor. Thor dressed as Freyja (complete with bridal wear) in order to once steal back his hammer.

Fans can see this inspiration in Nora’s weapon, which resembles Thor’s hammer Mjolnir as well as in her surname, Valkyrie.

9 What Is Significant About The Discovery Of Her Semblance

Another nod to Nora’s Thor inspiration is just how she discovered her Semblance. When recounting the events, Nora reveals to her friends that she was struck by lightning and survived, but also that it was a “crazy Thursday.”

In addition to lightning being associated with Thor as a result of his relationship with thunder, he’s also associated with the day Thursday. The name for the day actually traces its origin back to the term “Thor’s day,” named for the Norse god. That’s what “Thursday” means in Old English.

8 Is She A Morning Person

Nora With Ren And Weiss In RWBY Volume 7

Fans will be quick to point out that Nora has to be a morning person thanks to her singing “it’s morning, it’s morning” to Ren to wake him up in the first volume of the series. Nora being a morning person, however, is actually the foundation of her personality.

The volume one director’s commentary revealed that series creator Monty Oum gave Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross free reign to develop Nora. All he told them was that she was “a powerful woman.” Luna and Shawcross decided that making Nora a morning person, and Ren decidedly not, would act as the foundation of their personalities and partnership.

7 Has Nora Ever Lost A Fight

Nora Valkyrie blushing RWBY

As of the seventh volume of the series, Nora has participated in more than a dozen official battles. Of those, she’s only ever lost one, and it wasn’t a high stakes match up.

Nora has been forced to withdraw from battles to save other people or to keep moving, but her only true loss was a team loss. During the second volume of the series, Team RWBY and Team JNPR battled it out via food fight at Beacon Academy. Team RWBY came out on top, but Team JNPR put in a valiant effort. Nora even recreated her hammer using pieces of food to have a familiar weapon to fight with.

6 What Is Her Semblance

Nora Using Her High Voltage Semblance During The Vytal Festival In RWBY

Some fans might view Nora’s Semblance as akin to creating lightning bolts thanks to her Thor similarities, but that’s not entirely true. Called High Voltage, Nora’s Semblance allows her to channel electricity without facing the mortal consequences. She can then use the electricity to increase the strength of her own muscles, making her even stronger than she usually is.

Her teammates have learned that Nora can be given a boost with an electrical charge, so they can shoot her with their own electrical weapons to increase their odds of winning a fight. Of course, the downside is that, despite not being physically damaging to Nora, she can still feel the pain of being electrocuted if she’s not ready to channel the energy, as her enemies have learned in a fight as well.

5 Who Thought Ren And Nora Wouldn’t Make Good Partners

Nora and Ren have known each other longer than they’ve known ay of their other teammates. The two met as children when the village they lived in was attacked. They even applied to Beacon Academy to be student Huntsman together. Not everyone thought they would make good partners in the first volume.

When Ren and Nora participated in their first challenge at Beacon Academy, they officially became partners for their schooling. Teacher Glynda Goodwitch was observing the formation of partnerships, and was surprised that Nora and Ren ended up paired off. With Ren’s controlled demeanor and fighting style, and Nora’s bubbly personality and explosive fighting style, Glynda didn’t think the two were a good match. Over seven volumes, they’ve proved her wrong.

4 Just How Strong Is Nora

Nora Challenges Yang To An Arm Wrestling Match In RWBY

Because Nora’s Semblance increases her strength whenever she activates it, it can be hard to gauge just how strong she is. Nora does, however, seem to have incredible strength, much like Yang, even when she’s not using her Semblance.

Nora is able to carry her huge hammer without the aid of her Semblance, and she’s also able to make high jumps without activating it, which both indicate a pretty good deal of strength on their own. She’s even stated before that she can bench press five times her own bodyweight, though it’s unclear whether she meant she could do that on her own or with the aid of her Semblance.

3 What Else Can Her Hammer Do

Nora Valkyrie Uses Her Hammer's Propulsion To Make An Entrance RWBY

Nora’s hammer, known as Magnhild (from the Norse words for “strong” and “battle”), is much more than just a hammer. Like most of the weapons in the world of RWBY, Magnhild can convert from one form to another. While it can be wielded as a hammer, Nora also uses it as a grenade launcher.

In close combat, Nora is more likely to use the hammer form against her opponents - or as a lightning rod to charge up her own strength. For ranged combat, however, Nora uses the grenade launcher. Nora is also likely to use the grenade launcher when she wants to travel. By launching a few grenades, she can use the propulsion from Magnhild to launch her into the air, like she’s flying.

2 Is Thor The Only Inspiration For Her Hammer

Nora Valkyrie In RWBY

Thor does provide a lot of Nora’s inspiration. Yes, her hammer is a nod to his, but there’s also another cultural practice that inspired Nora’s hammer usage.

In Mexico, there’s a tradition for Fat Tuesday. Men gather with their sledgehammers and homemade explosives to let off a little steam. According to Rooster Teeth podcasts, that very tradition is what gave Nora’s hammer a little extra bite. The creative team saw video of the celebration, and it inspired them to make Nora’s hammer a bit more explosive.

1 Does Nora’s Name Have Special Meaning

Ren Jaune Nora And Ruby Make Up Team RNJR In RWBY

Given that many of the main characters in RWBY have names associated with their signature color, Nora Valkyrie’s name seems like an exception. After all, Valkyrie is a nod to her Norse inspirations and Nora is short for a lot of Greek and Latin names that simply mean “honor” or “light.” There is, however, a possible nod to her signature color: pink.

Nora Barlow was the granddaughter of Charles Darwin. She grew up to be a botanist and a geneticist, interested in the natural world, like most of her family. A flower is named for her, the Nora Barlow Columbine, and it is, as you might have guessed, pink. It’s possible the flower provided some of the pink inspiration.
