After Earth's Mightiest Heroes reversed the Decimation and defeated Thanos, Captain America went back in time to return the various Infinity Stones. Although his journey wasn't shown in Avengers: Endgame, he invariably would have had to meet his old nemesis, the Red Skull, on Vormir to return the Soul Stone. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have now joked about what that meeting might have looked like.

During a Reddit AMA, Anthony replied to a question about the meeting, saying, "It was probably more awkward than you imagine it was. Red Skull felt slated because Cap didn't recognize him."

The joke seemingly references the change in actors playing Red Skull. While Weaving portrayed the villain in Captain America: The First Avenger, the actor did not return for Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame, though he was asked. Ultimately, he was replaced by actor Ross Marquand for the former HYDRA leader's two cameo appearances as the grim guardian of the Soul Stone.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Brie Larson, Paul Rudd, Don Cheadle, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira and Bradley Cooper, with Josh Brolin as Thanos. The film is now available on Digital HD and arrives Aug. 13 on Blu-ray and 4K UHD.
