Russell Crowe To Play Jor-El?

During the production of the now classic 1978 film "Superman: The Movie," star Marlon Brando famously suggested that rather than dress in the full costume of the Man of Steel's birth father Jor-El, he only record his dialogue so that the filmed Kryptonian scientist could be represented by a green suitcase. Today, Variety brings us word that the next actor to play Superman's father on the big screen may not be quite as difficult to work with.

The Hollywood trade has word that actor Russell Crowe is in negotiations to play the doomed father in Warner Bros. and director Zack Snyder's incoming "Superman: The Man of Steel" - a series reboot of the original DC Comics superhero on the big screen. If he signs on the dotted line, the Academy Award-winner will flesh out an A-list cast that includes Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Michael Shannon (General Zod) and relative newcomer Henry Cavill as Superman himself.

Variety explained that while other big names including Sean Penn and Clive Owen were considered for the role, Crowe was the main choice for Snyder and the production team led by "The Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan, who penned the screen story with script writer David S. Goyer. "Superman: The Man of Steel" is expected to begin shooting next month.
