Rupert Wyatt ("Rise of the Planet of the Apes") will direct Fox's recently ordered pilot for "The Exorcist," a modern take on William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel.

Written by "Fantastic Four" scribe Jeremy Slater, the project is described as a serialized psychological thriller that follows two very different men tackling one family's case of demonic possession.

Inspired by the 1949 exorcism of Roland Doe, the novel was family adapted by Blatty himself for director William Friedkin's 1973 film "The Exorcist," widely considered one of the greatest and most influential horror movies of all time.

Wyatt, who was at one point attached to Fox's X-Men movie spinoff "Gambit," previously directed the pilot for AMC's period drama: Turn: Washington's Spies."
