WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Runaways #35 by Rainbow Rowell, Andrés Genolet, Dee Cunniffe, and VC’s Joe Caramagna, on sale now

As befitting any team that's composed of teenagers, there's been plenty of romantic intrigue within the Runaways over the years. This has been especially hectic lately, with two major romances from across the history of the series setting up possible reasons to break-up -- or get back together.

While the romance between Nico and Karolina has hit another snag, it appears that Chase and a time-displaced version of Gert have rekindled their relationship.

Nico and Karolina had circled each for a while before they ever began their romance, with Karolina developing feelings for a romantically uninterested Nico all the way back in the original series. Things took a turn in Runaways #12, with the pair formally beginning a romance. However, their brief stint with the J-Team resulted in Karolina almost dying and feeling particularly depleted. Meanwhile, Nico has learned more about the true history of the Staff of One -- including the fact that there's a powerful magician trapped within the Staff known as the One. Every time she uses the Staff, a little bit of his soul is placed within hers for a time.

After her encounter with Pixie, Nico ends up approaching Karolina and talking to her. While Karolina initially believes she's about to end the relationship, Nico denies this -- but decides it's time to open up about the One. Karolina tells Nico to give her the staff so it can be destroyed and they can be free of it. But Nico refuses, arguing that keeping her mystical powers means she can protect her loved ones and bring them back from the dead if they're hurt -- again. Nico ultimately leaves the room, leaving a distraught Karolina behind as they try to figure out what to do next. The recent stress the pair have gone through has been pushing their romance increasingly towards a breaking point. But this newest revelation might be the final straw for Karolina and could set up Nico to fall further away from her friends.

On the other hand, Chase Stein and Gert Yorkes ended up unexpectedly developing feelings for one another in the original Runaways series-- which left Chase particularly devastated when she was killed by a time-displaced Geoffrey Wilder. After years of trying to move on, Chase was able to fix a time machine they'd ended up in possession of and used it to take Gert from her original place in the timeline to the present day, where Nico was able to restore Gert. However, adapting to a world that had moved past her ended up messing with Gert, especially as the now large age gap between her and Chase also hung overhead. Gert and Chase decided not to resume their romance, with the young woman ending up in a brief romance with her teammate Victor.

However, Gert has grown increasingly distant from Victor recently and has been talking with other boys at high school -- at the same time that Chase has been sneaking off from the rest of the group. It appears that the two are connected, as Chase is revealed to have been going to see Gert. Walking up to her and complimenting her, the two share a passionate kiss under the night sky. Notably, this version of Gert does appear a little bit older than the present-day incarnation, especially with a distinct purple streak added back to her hair -- and given Gert's access to her parent's time-travel device, this could likely turn out to be a version of Gert from further in the timeline, returned to the present-day.

But this raises a number of questions, chief among them why Chase is keeping this a secret and if there are any potential manipulations at play. But at least at first glance, it appears that one of the foundational romances of Runaways is back on.
