A new report indicates Sony Pictures has “indefinitely” halted production on its upcoming Spider-Man spinoff film, Silver & Black. The Marvel Comics-based movie, which is set to focus on female heroes Silver Sable and Black Cat, was reportedly set to begin production around early March in Atlanta following the filming of its sister film, the Tom Hardy-led Venom. Apparently, that will no longer be the case, with the film being put on hold for an undisclosed period of time, just a week away from when it was slated to begin principal photography.
The report comes from That Hashtag Show, which notes the news comes suspiciously after reports of Sony considering selling its major film assets (in a move not dissimilar to Fox) under its new boss, Kenichiro Yoshida. It’s possible Sony is delaying Silver & Black until a business decision is made on that front.
Of course, the film being halted “indefinitely” doesn’t mean it will never happen. It could be delayed just months, weeks, or even days. Or, perhaps, it could be shelved entirely.
Scheduled to hit theaters on February 8, 2019, Silver and Black will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. No additional casting details for the film have been released at this time.
