Rian Johnson's Star Wars trilogy may still be moving forward, according to LRMOnline. A source at Lucasfilm has allegedly claimed that Johnson's new trilogy will be released at some point after the Star Wars film directed by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit), which is scheduled for a 2024 premiere.

Lucasfilm currently has three release dates staked out for Star Wars films: December 16, 2022, December 20, 2024, and December 18, 2026, respectively. If Johnson does indeed have a trilogy scheduled to begin after Waititi's film, then he will have plenty of time to shape the direction of the story.

Johnson wrote and directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the second film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. The Last Jedi sparked heated debate among some Star Wars fans, particularly with the creative choices Johnson made over the course of the film. Despite the online furor, the film was a critical and commercial success. Johnson's trilogy was announced before The Last Jedi premiered in theaters, suggesting that Lucasfilm had faith in his storytelling abilities.

Johnson's latest film was Knives Out, which he also wrote and directed. Centering around "gentleman sleuth" Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) and his effort to solve the murder of novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer), the film was a critical and commercial success, and Johnson is working on a sequel.
