Fans have long been clamoring for an open world video game featuring the Man of Steel that's in a similar vein to the widely popular Batman: Arkham games. Now, a new rumor suggests that Rocksteady Studios is poised to announce such a project within the next few weeks.

The rumor, which originated on 4chan (and should be taken with a grain of salt), indicates that the game will supposedly be unveiled by Rocksteady prior to the E3 gaming expo (June 12-14). The anonymous poster also included the following details:

  • Made by Rocksteady
  • Unreal Engine 4
  • Big open world Metropolis (about 3 times the size of Arkham Knight with a lot more buildings)
  • Can’t play as Clark Kent
  • Main villain is Brainiac
  • Nerfed Superman (TAS Levels)
  • Semi-destructible environments(think AK, no buildings are falling over)
  • Combat system integrates the flying (kind of like DBZ, you can punch someone then zoom towards them and repeat)
  • Set within the Arkhamverse
  • Tons of easter eggs to Superman’s lore, and some to the events that took place in the Batman Arkham Franchise

Rocksteady Studios is responsible for the beloved Batman: Arkham series, which encompasses 2009’s Arkham Asylum, 2011’s Arkham City and 2015’s Arkham Knight. Those games feature voice talent from Batman: The Animated Series and a much-praised combat system. In October, Rocksteady Studios’ head of marketing Gaz Deaves said that the studio was working on a mind-blowing project. While it’s still not clear what that project is, it may still end up being a Superman game, though at this point nothing definite is known.

There have been a number of Superman games released over the years, many of which are considered poor quality. A lot of critics and fans consider 1999’s Superman: The New Superman Adventures, also known as Superman 64, one of the worst games of all-time. In 2015, WB Games Montreal, who made 2013’s Batman: Arkham Origins, was rumored to be working on a game starring the Man of Steel.

The hero is a playable character in NetherRealm Studios’ Injustice franchise.
