It isn't long now until Netflix releases the upcoming series, The Witcher, the live-action adaptation of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski's dark fantasy novel series. While post-production on the show nears completion, showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich and her talented team of writers are already working on season 2.

But a second season may not be all that Netflix has in store for fans of Sapkowski's world. According to the NSFW blog, Recapped, Netflix may be developing an animated series to accompany the live-action show. "They were casting for an animated series set in the world of The Witcher and featuring some side characters a while back" Recapped wrote, "The plan was to make this available on Netflix sometime between season 1 and 2. No idea whether or not this is still happening."

The blog has had a perfect record thus far for Witcher news. It was the first to reveal Henry Cavill and Anya Chalotra's casting as Geralt of Rivia and Yennefer of Vengerberg, respectively. It should also be noted that an animated tie-in would not be unusual for a Netflix series.

A side-character focused series is well within the vision Hissrich seems to have for the show, which she said would follow the novels faithfully. Readers will know that significant parts of the story are told through the eyes of ordinary people, observing the war on The Continent or the witcher himself in action from the side, leaving a lot of room for interpretation and mystery. If these rumors prove to be accurate and we do get to see an animated Witcher series, this could very well be what audiences can expect to see.

The Witcher stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allan as Ciri and Joey Batey as Jaskier. The series will be available to stream on Netflix this December.
