No sooner did news break yesterday that 30 Days of Night director David Slade will helm Fox’s new Daredevil than a report surfaced about the movie’s expected source material. It’s information that’s likely to surprise no one.
According to Heat Vision’s sources, the new film will adapt “Born Again,” the revered 1986 storyline by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli that cast a long shadow over virtually every Daredevil comic that came after it.
In the seven-issue arc, Daredevil’s drug-addicted girlfriend Karen Page sells Matt Murdock’s secret identity in exchange for a shot of heroin. The information finds its way to the Kingpin, who begins a six-month crusade to destroy his nemesis, dismantling Murdock’s life — he loses his money, his home and his law license — and pushing the Man Without Fear over the edge.
Fox asserts that the so-far untitled project — who wants to wager what it’ll be called? — will continue the story begun in the largely disliked 2003 Ben Affleck film, so “Born Again” could certainly fit the bill.
The follow-up doesn’t have a writer yet, or a lead actor (Affleck isn’t involved). However, whispers circulating online last week, before the Slade announcement, point to TRON: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund as a possibility. But that may be wishful thinking on the part of fans, rather than the studio.
