Since the release of the critically-acclaimed film of 2018, fans have been clamoring for news about Black Panther 2, anything that might provide hints as to what the king of Wakanda will be up against or whether or not the fan-favorite supervillain, Killmonger, will return from the grave.

Unfortunately, nothing that substantial has come to light. However, it may excite fans to know that the long-awaited sequel may begin filming early next year. According to MCU Cosmic, Black Panther 2 will be filming at Fox Studios in Australia some time between March and June, 2021. Although it does note that with production purportedly beginning more than a year from now, plans may easily change.

This rumor is supported by a statement made by actor Martin Freeman early last year. Freeman, who plays Everett Ross, hinted that it "might be 2021 when we're making the next Black Panther. That's all I know," in an interview.

Ryan Coogler's Black Panther opened to widespread praise from both critics and audiences alike for its gripping depiction of cultural conflicts, among other things. Killmonger in particular continues to be a standout among villains of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, based on his undeniable complexity.

Rumors began to circulate in mid-2019 that the villain might return, much as he did in the comics. There were also rumors that Namor was being considered for the film's primary antagonist, but as of yet, both of these rumors remain largely unsubstantiated.

Black Panther 2 is currently in development. Ryan Coogler is returning as writer and director with Chadwick Boseman, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira and Martin Freeman reprising their roles. The film is scheduled to hit theaters May 6, 2022.
