Each Christmas, many fans gather around their televisions to watch the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the stop-motion animated classic based on the beloved song. And by the time the holiday season rolls around again, you'll be able to have a comic-book equivalent to enjoy with your friends and family.

In September, Ardden Entertainment and Square Fish (a imprint of Macmillan) will release the standalone original graphic novel Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Island of Misfit Toys.

This slim, 64-page book by Brendan Deneen and George Kambadais takes the Rankin/Bass TV production and spins off a new story in which the lovable Charlie-in-a-Box is lost at sea and his fellow misfits race to save him. Planned to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the perennial TV favorite, this story shows King Moonracer leading a band of heroes, including Yukon Cornelius and the Abominable Snow Monster, on a rescue mission to save their friend and return him home in time for Santa's Christmas delivery.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is the kind of story that seems obvious for comic storytelling, and it's interesting to note that DC Comics published a series of 20 Christmas annuals between 1950 and 1980 depicting the character's adventures (although they weren't tied to the Rankin/Bass special).
