Roswell, New Mexico creator Carina Adly MacKenzie has left her role as showrunner on The CW series. Co-showrunner Christopher Hollier is expected to take over the series, though no official announcement has been made at this time.

"Carina Adly MacKenzie has departed as executive producer/co-showrunner of Roswell, New Mexico. The third season of the series will return to The CW as part of the network’s 2021 midseason lineup," The CW announced.

"I have made the difficult decision to resign from my role on Roswell, New Mexico," MacKenzie added in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. "I do not take this decision lightly, but ultimately due to fundamental differences, I must depart and entrust Roswell, New Mexico to capable hands. I am so proud of what we built over the last two years, and I believe in the heart and soul of the show: asking tough questions, striving to make the world better, amplifying marginalized voices and fighting the good fight."

MacKenzie's exit follows tensions with the network and the show's writers and actors. According to THR, she spent "an unusual amount of time" on the New Mexico set, even though showrunners typically run the writers' room. In her absence, Hollier took charge of the Los Angeles-based writers' room, but she often re-wrote scripts and turned hers in late.

Additionally, the report describes "friction" between MacKenzie and some of the talent, up to and including star Jeanine Mason, which led to an investigation by Warner Bros. HR. Some of these issues improved with Season 2's extra lead-in time, but the report indicates problems like this stemmed largely from her absence from the writers' room.

According to the report, Warner Bros. had to do "damage control" as recently as June, after MacKenzie accused ITV of homophobia, biphobia and bigotry when the UK channel selectively edited sex scenes on the show. "Really, really, REALLY upset to hear that ITV cut out a (pretty tame) love scene between two men and kept a (much more raunchy) heterosexual sex scene in their airing of an episode of Roswell, NM tonight. There are a lot of angry tears happening at my house tonight," she wrote on Twitter. "It’s just blatant homophobia/biphobia/bigotry and I’m so, so sorry and so, so angry. Frankly I’d be fine never watching another straight white couple bone on TV EVER AGAIN." The incident merited an official response from an ITV spokesperson.

MacKenzie is a first-time showrunner who got her start as a writers' assistant on The CW's The Originals. She became a writer and story editor on that series and contributed to The Flash before launching Roswell, New Mexico. In April 2018, she landed a two-year development deal with Warner Bros. TV, although she is reportedly no longer under this agreement.

Roswell, New Mexico stars Jeanine Mason, Nathan Parsons, Michael Vlamis, Lily Cowles, Tyler Blackburn, Heather Hemmens, Michael Trevino and Trevor St. John. Season 3 will premiere during The CW's mid-season in 2021.
