Romance in anime is a genre that can be expected to deliver hits each year. The genre has given viewers some major hits over the years with shows like Your Lie in April, Toradora, and Nana. With a new decade of anime comes new series for anime fans to enjoy, as well as some familiar faces to return.

All the anime on this list have either started airing during this year or are planned to be released in 2020. Anime that started prior and continued into 2020 will not be counted. Be sure to check out any of the series that interest you.

10 Hatena☆Illusion

Kicking off the list is Hatena☆Illusion. The magic anime has already started airing during the current winter 2020 season. Makoto Shiranui looks up to world-class magician, Mamoru Hoshisato. Becoming his apprentice, Makoto and his childhood friend Kana Hoshisato, known as Hatena, live in Tokyo where Makoto learns there's more to life than just magic.

After some hardships, Makoto is reunited with Hatena, but things aren’t the same as they were when they were kids. The series has ecchi elements to it. Hatena☆Illusion was adapted by studio Children’s Playground Entertainment and debuted during the winter 2020 season. The anime is currently airing its first season.

9 Sing “Yesterday” For Me

The slice of life drama series not only makes the list for anticipated romance anime but also made the list for all genres. Rikuo Uozumi is not motivated to do anything in life. He works at the nearby convenience store, watching as the days go by.

Haru Nonaka, Rikuo’s ex-girlfriend, interrupts his boring day-to-day life when they run into each other one day. Rikuo’s life will now become more exciting thanks to Haru and her pet raven. Sing “Yesterday” For Me will be adapted by studio Doga Kobo during the spring 2020 season. The anime is one season and projected to be 12 episodes.

8 In/Spectre

In/Spectre has made its mark on the current winter 2020 season proving that it’s one of the better series of the season. The anime follows Kotoko Iwanaga, a girl who traded her right eye and left leg to become the mediator between the Spirit World and the Human World.

Along with Kurou Sakuragawa, the duo inspects different supernatural apparitions that are turning up in the human world. Kurou’s ex-girlfriend, Saki Yumihara, works for the police force and gets herself involved with the apparitions as well. In/Spectre was adapted by studio Brains Base during the winter 2020 season. The anime is one season and projected to be 12 episodes.

7 Nakitai Watashi wa Neko wo Kaburu

The first anime film on this list, Nakitai Watashi wa Neko wo Kaburu centers around a story about finding your inner self. Miyo Sasaki, known as Muge, is an upbeat school girl in love with Kento Hinode.

Kento doesn’t take interest in Miyo which leaves her only one option. Miyo turns herself into a cat hoping to get more attention from him. This blurs the lines between Human Muge and Cat Muge. Nakineko will be adapted by Studio Colorido on June 5, 2020.

6 Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It

Kaguya-sama: Love is War brought viewers a psychological twist to two lovers and now, Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It provides a scientific angle. The anime follows Shinya Yukimura and Ayame Himuro, two scientists who are tasked with proving they are in love with each other.

With the help of the other scientists at the lab, the two hypothesize and test different scenarios to answer their question. Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It is adapted by studio Zero-G during the winter 2020 season. The anime will last one season and is currently airing.

5 Given (Film)

The other anime film on this list is Given. The boys love anime tells the story of two musicians who met at school. Ritsuka Uenoyama meets Mafuyu Satou when he notices Mafuyu carrying around a guitar with broken strings. After fixing his guitar and finding out that Ritsuka is in a band Mafuyu hangs around Ritsuka even watching the band practice.

While interested in music, Mafuyu isn’t much of a guitar player. However, when Ritsuka hears Mafuyu sing for the first time, the former’s heart is captivated and he decides to make the latter the lead singer. Given was adapted by studio Lerche during the summer 2019 season. The film will be a sequel to Given's first season and will be released on May 16, 2020.

4 SNAFU: My Teen Romantic Comedy Third Season

romance anime list would not be complete without My Teen Romantic Comedy! The Volunteer Service club is back to get up to more antics. Hachiman Hikigaya, Yui Yuigahama, and Yukino Yukinoshita have found success in being able to help any student at the school with their problems, even if mostly using obscure methods.

It is a safe bet that the third season will be filled with more outlandish solutions. SNAFU: My Teen Romantic Comedy Third Season will continue to be adapted by studio feel. The anime will be released during the spring 2020 season.

3 Fruits Basket Second Season

The original Fruits Basket was praised for being a solid romance series and the remake just increased its stature. Now with the Fruits Basket remake's second season being released this year, fans have a romance slice of life series to look forward too.

Tooru Honda, also written as Toru, has moved into the Souma house and is getting along with Kyou, Yuki, and the rest of the Chinese Zodiacs. Expect for things to heat up as Tooru discovers more of the family's secrets. Fruits Basket 2019 was adapted by studio TMS Entertainment, and the sequel is projected to be released during the spring 2020 season.

2 Beastars

While technically a 2019 anime, Beastars was region-locked to Japan during its fall 2019 release. The series follows Legoshi, a wolf who attends Cherryton Academy. The school is shared by carnivores and herbivores, but after an incident occurs, the carnivores are on thin ice. Legoshi is part of the drama club but puts most of his focus on Haru, a rabbit girl.

Being a wolf, Legoshi must battle his carnivorous instincts if he wants to confess his feelings to Haru. Beastars was adapted by studio Orange and a second season has been confirmed for 2020. The expected release date for the first season is March 13, 2020, for North American Netflix users.

1 Kaguya-sama: Love is War Second Season

Rounding out the list as the most anticipated romance anime for 2020, Kaguya-sama: Love is War is back for its second season. Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane recently won Best Couple at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards so it’s no surprise their series tops the list.

The series is a back and forth battle of wits as the two try to get each other to confess their feelings, but neither is willing to do it first. A plethora of psychological tactics are unleashed by each to get the upper hand. Kaguya-sama: Love is War Second Season will be adapted by studio A-1 Pictures during the spring 2020 season.
