As the holiday season approaches, those hosting parties will be looking for new and fun ways to entertain friends and family. Alongside traditional holiday activities, families will likely be looking to play a fun game, generally with a seasonal theme. This, much like any number of traditions, comes with its own set of challenges. The game must be entertaining for all ages, and it needs to be simple enough for the average non-gamer to pick up. This is where tabletop-RPGs come in handy.

TTRPGs have bottomless and simple playability, and many micro-RPGs are the size of a book or two and a few pieces of paper. A rules-lite TTRPG is a wise choice for a large or small gathering of family and friends, and there are few TTRPGs lighter on the rules than the humor-oriented, hyper-specific Roll for Shoes.

Roll for Shoes Is Great for Both New & Experienced Players

The holiday season is a time for imagination to shine, and TTRPGs run off of imagination. The only issue is that many TTRPGs, even rules-lite ones, take a while to learn to play. For people looking to occupy 45 post-dinner minutes (especially those who haven't played a TTRPG before) this can be a major stumbling block. Thankfully, Roll for Shoes is ridiculously easy to learn.

After having players make their own characters, which doesn't involve any stats or characteristics beyond fitting into the story, a Game Master can get things started by giving players a situation. As the characters attempt to do something, the players roll their dice. If that action is successful, the get an extra die for the next time they try that task with increasing specificity. For example, a player gets one six-sided die for jumping. After a successful roll, they may get two dice for jumping into things. Then, they may get a third for jumping into small spaces, a fourth for jumping into small spaces while carrying things, a fifth for jumping into small spaces while carrying things wrapped in burlap while being chased, and so on. While there are some other minor rules, this is the overwhelming majority of the game.

Roll for Shoes is a very bare-bones system, and there is no specific goal or world or set logic that games must follow. Characters can be reindeer, elves, or even Christmas dragons. This also means that the game system can be played at other occasions and with different numbers of people, making it a welcome addition to any shelf (if any printed assets are used).

Roll for Shoes is a quick and free TTRPG anyone can pick up any time of the year. It's playable by anyone who has a six-sided die in their home and the time to learn six rules. It's fun, silly, and perfect for a holiday party big or small, and Roll for Shoes truly exemplifies the perfect holiday party game.
