Even among the wealth of merchandise designed to tie into “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” Hot Toys’ range of deluxe action figures stands out for the quality of the work, and what better way to demonstrate that quality than by showing how their figures’ 30 points of articulation and interchangeable hands can be employed to make an incredible stop-motion animation? Well, the custom toymaker has done just that in the video below.
What seems even more impressive is that the animation isn’t an attempt to slavishly recreate Chirrut Îmwe’s Stormtrooper takedown from “Rogue One”; it’s a whole new choreographed fight sequence — one that isn’t interrupted by some fast heavy repeater cannon work from Îmwe’s buddy Baze Malbus.
The only drawback to the whole scene is the price of those Hot Toys figures, which often exceeds $200 each. At that price, the cost of attempting your own stop-motion animation with these figures gets real expensive real quick, but — if you’ve got the money — these really might be the “Star Wars” collectibles you’re looking for.
The film is directed by Gareth Edwards from a script by Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is now in theaters.
