Following Thursday's 10-second teaser, the tense first trailer has debuted for "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."

Set shortly before the events of 1977's "Star Wars: A New Hope," the first standalone "anthology" film in the franchise centers on a ragtag group of Rebels on a secret mission to steal the plans for the Death Star.

The teaser centers on Felicity Jones' character Jyn, a forger and thief who's called upon by Rebel leader Mon Mothma to discover what the massive new weapon the Galactic Empire is testing, and how to destroy it.

Directed by Gareth Edwards ("Godzilla," "Monsters") from a script by Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz, "Rogue One" stars Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen, Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna and Riz Ahmed.

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" opens Dec. 16.
