Five years since the release of the acclaimed Batman: Arkham Knight made Rocksteady Studios fans' go-to example of the pinnacle in DC Comics-based video games, developer has confirmed its next project is a game focused on the Suicide Squad.Reports surfaced this past June of Rocksteady claiming domain names affiliated with the team, and now the video game developer has tweeted a teaser image featuring the Man of Steel ominously in the crosshairs. The image also promises that the game will be represented during DC FanDome on Aug. 22.RELATED: The Suicide Squad Cast Gathers for James Gunn Birthday Video Message

A Suicide Squad video game was first announced at Comic-Con International: San Diego in 2010. At the time, the Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment project was described by then-DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns as "hardcore violent." However, while work was apparently underway on the game, it fell into obscurity and was swiftly overshadowed by Arkham City and Arkham Knight.

The teaser image comes ahead of DC FanDome, a 24-hour online fan event organized by DC Entertainment dedicated to the company's major projects in comic books, television, film and video games. Considering the level DC is hyping the online convention, a first look trailer will likely be unveiled at the event.

Previously, Rocksteady had developed the award-winning Arkham trilogy, starting with 2009's Batman: Arkham Asylum, its 2011 sequel Arkham City and 2015's Arkham Knight, along with its spinoff VR experience Arkham VR. Since then, the studio has been linked to a variety of rumored projects, including a Superman video game and the now-confirmed Suicide Squad project. The announcement, of course, comes with the new Suicide Squad film, helmed by James Gunn. The movie, currently in post-production is another major piece of the DC FanDome puzzle, with the director having promised casting revelations, a ratings announcement and much more during the 24-hour virtual convention.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Joaquin Cosio, Nathan Fillion, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Idris Elba and Michael Rooker.
