Slim Shady himself almost appeared in a film adaptation of Grand Theft Auto.

As reported by Eurogamer, Eminem almost starred in a Grand Theft Auto film before Rockstar Games president Sam Houser turned the idea down. The conversation came up during a podcast, Bugzy Malone's Grandest Game, where the titular rapper interviewed game developer Kirk Ewing about Grand Theft Auto. Ewing recalled the late-night pitch process with Houser about the potential movie adaptation. "This was just after 3 [released]," Ewing said. "And I think at that point it was still in Sam's mind that it might be something that they wanted to do."

Ewing reluctantly continued by sharing that the canceled movie may have starred Eminem with Top Gun's Tony Scott as a director. As for Rockstar, the game studio would have received $5 million. "At that point, they withdrew from any conversation about making a film when they realised the media franchise they had was bigger than any movie that was going on at the time," he continued.

Despite Grand Theft Auto not receiving a film adaptation, the franchise's sixth mainline installment featured many celebrity appearances. Ricky Gervais and Katt Williams play performers at Split Sides comedy club in Grand Theft Auto IV. Additionally, Samuel L. Jackson played Officer Frank Tenpenny in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and the late Ray Liotta voiced Tommy Vercetti in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

GTA Remains One of Few Major Games Without an Adaptation

While Grand Theft Auto is one of the major video game franchises without a film adaptation, many popular series have received movies or TV shows in the past few years. On Nov. 2, HBO Max confirmed the release date of the series adaptation of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us. The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal and Game of Thrones' Bella Ramsay respectively portray Joel and Ellie in the haunting post-apocalyptic world.

Additionally, Netflix secured the streaming rights for a feature film and adult animated series adaptation of the Xbox 360 franchise Gears of War. WWE superstar Dave Bautista responded to Cliff Bleszinski's casting endorsement to star as Marcus Fenix in the future adaptation. The former World Heavyweight Champion posted a video of himself wearing the COG armor from his guest appearance in the video game Gears 5. "I can't make this any easier," Bautista wrote.

It's unclear whether Rockstar plans to consider a film or television adaptation of Grand Theft Auto in the future.
