It has been nearly a year since it was announced that director Neill Blomkamp had signed on to direct a new take on the 80's classic, RoboCop. Since then, however, little to no information has been made available as to the status of the project -- at least, until today.A fan sent a question to the director on Twitter, looking for an update regarding RoboCop Returns, to which Blomkamp offered a small update that should make fans of the original film excited. “Script is being written. Going well,” he responded. “Imagine watching Verhoeven do a follow up film.” Verhoeven, of course, refers to Paul Verhoeven -- the director of the original 1987 film, RoboCop.RELATED: Neill Blomkamp to Direct New RoboCop MovieWhen it was announced Blomkamp would direct RoboCop Returns, it was also revealed that the writers behind the original film, Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, would be serving as producer and executive producer on RoboCop Returns. Also, the script the duo worked on for a previous RoboCop sequel would be re-written by Justin Rhodes -- which is notable since Rhodes penned the latest Terminator installment, Terminator: Dark Fate. That franchise, much like the RoboCop franchise, is also looking to get a new lease on life with its latest sequel.

While little is currently known regarding RoboCop Returns, there is speculation the new film will be rated-R, and will take place a year after the first film. Blomkamp has previously teased that he'd love to see Peter Weller, who portrayed the titular character in RoboCop, return for RoboCop Returns. However, it has since been reported that the actor isn't interested in returning for the new installment.
