The following article contains spoilers from Dark Crisis #1, on sale now.

In the wake of the Justice League's death in Dark Crisis #1 (by Joshua Williamson, Daniel Sampere, Alejandro Sanchez, and Tom Napolitano), Jon Kent went around the world trying to recruit a new league. Naturally, one of the first people he went to was his best friend, Damian Wayne. Surprisingly though, Damian refused to join, not believing that his father was truly dead.

What's concerning about this is that DC's future state has demonstrated what Damian could turn into if he is incapable of accepting that a loved one has past. His refusal to accept that his father was dead led him down the path to becoming Batman 666 in the distant future. He now finds himself in a similar situation in the present day. If he hasn't reestablished contact with the rest of his family, then Damian may find himself in a spiraling towards his darkest possible future earlier than anticipated.

Robin Doesn't Believe Batman Is Dead

The reason Damian became Batman 666 at all was to find his father. When the Magistrate took over Gotham in the future, he was locked outside it, and could only listen to the news of Batman's death. After his family didn't address his needs, his quest to ascertain whether his father was truly gone led him to interfere with forces beyond his normal skill level. He tortured an angel for information before finally diving into Hell under the false assumption that he would find his father there.

That mistake trapped him in Hell for an indeterminate amount of time, aging him to adulthood and twisting his personality into something sinister. Damian came back to Earth a monster hellbent on vengeance. Now, his present self is in a similar predicament. His father has been declared dead for all the world to hear, and no one seems to be coming to comfort him in his time of need. Damian however, is in denial. He does not believe his father is gone, just like his future self, and that belief may have consequences. He has only recently re-established a relationship with his father, and it is unknown whether he has done so with the rest of his family.

Future State Batman 666

If he hasn't then in all likelihood he is traveling around the world by himself, left to his own devices. History and the future have shown that Damian doesn't do well when he is alone. While he is entirely capable of surviving, without other people he trusts to temper his worst impulses, Damian can jump the gun and make hasty decisions. The consequences of which tend to affect everyone he's close to. The people in Damian's life need to take a minute to contemplate how he might be feeling. His adoptive siblings are out there and just as hurt.

Likewise, Jon's desperation to form a new Justice League may be blinding him to the fact that he and Damian now share a loss. Now is the time to reach out. In times of grief, leaning on the support networks established through friendship and family are vital to react to death in a healthy way. Damian's entire upbringing has taught him the wrong ways to handle death, he needs people more accustomed to it to help him get through it. If not, the results could be catastrophic.
