In the more than 80 years since Robin was first introduced, several characters have worn the mantle of the Boy Wonder and defeated an uncountable number of villains. But they all remember the first villain they took down. The first issue of Robins showcases the five main heroes who've worn the costume, shines a spotlight on a previously unseen chapter of their lives, and reveals a deadly secret about who might have been the first Robin.
Robins #1 by Tim Seeley, Balderman Rivas, Romulo Fajardo Jr, Steve Wands and Andrew Marino points a spotlight on the Robins' first villains and unearths a secret about the Robin identity that none of them knew about. After defeating a group of Devotees of Anarky that were planning to blow up part of Blüdhaven, Nightwing wrangles Red Hood, Red Robin, Spoiler and Robin together in his air condition-less apartment to discuss if their time as Robin was a good thing or not.
Each of the Robins says their piece about how they felt being a Robin affected their life and how it changed them, but just as Dick and Jason were confronting each other about Jason killing one of the Devotees of Anarky, Tim got a notification that the Bat-Computer locked him out. Stephanie noticed a Robin at the window, only for Tim to say that in some cultures it's an omen of death. Right then, an old man careened through the door and started rambling to Dick about how he and a group of villains were broken out of Blackgate. The man mentions "Garzonas, that Innocente creep [and] the Shadid Girl." As he mentioned their names, the Robins slowly realize their identities, the first villains they ever defeated during their first cases, which they call their "gauntlets."
Jason asked if the man meant Felipe Garzonas but the man clarified it was Jose Garzonas. Felipe Garzonas was sexually assaulting a woman when Jason tried to arrest him, only to find out he had diplomatic immunity because he was the son of José Garzonas, the ambassador to Bogatoga. When Felipe was released, Jason confronted him, and either tripped Felipe or pushed him off a balcony. Makenson Innocente, also known as the Obeah Man, was a Haitian criminal who kidnapped Tim Drake's parents, Janet and Jack, while they were on a trip to Haiti. While Batman managed to defeat Innocente, the Drake's were forced to drink poison, which killed Janet and crippled Jack. Innocente managed to escape back to Haiti but Tim Drake, as Robin, brought him back to the United States.
Stephanie faced Maat Shadid, aka Scarab, was an assassin hired by Johnny Warlock to kill Tim Drake that Steph met during her brief tenure as Robin. When they first met, Scarab had put Tim's face through facial recognition and was killing every person who looked like him in Gotham. Stephanie chased Scarab against Batman's orders and was eventually captured, leading to Batman suspending her as Robin. Finally, Stephanie identifies the man as Delcaine, a member of the organized crime syndicate Robin took down during his first solo night out in Gotham. Delcaine attempts to tell the group that something truly evil is coming for them but he's cut short by a bullet to the head that came through the window.
While the Robins scramble inside the apartment, the Robin that was at the window flies back to the shooter. A chalk-white-skinned woman dressed in a makeshift Robin costume holding a slingshot and a bag of steel balls. The woman tells the bird that it's in poor form to assemble all the Robins and "not invite the very first one." While each of the Robins has been a monumental hero in their own right, the mantle binds them all together into one group. With their first villains coming back into their lives and the possibility of there being a Robin none of them knew about, the past is coming back to haunt the Robins.
