Robin, the yellow-caped Boy Wonder in green culottes, is often a source of ridicule to the general public, owing to his youth, his garishly colored costume, and memories of a fist-pounding Burt Ward. But comic fans know better, as Robin is a formidable warrior, master of multiple martial arts, stealth tactics, espionage, battle strategy, escape artistry and the fine art of detection. In any of his alter-egos, Robin is more than a match for almost any opponent, proving the faith of his mentor is warranted. Here are 5 Marvel Heroes Robin can Defeat and 5 he Can’t.

10 Can Beat: Moon Knight

The current Robin, Damian Wayne, is the son of Batman and Talia Al Ghul, whose father, Ra’s Al Ghul, is an immortal at the head of a vast and secret revolutionary organization. As such, Damian has been trained by the best fighters and strategists in literally centuries, and despite his size and age, has held his own in fights with everyone from the Joker to his own father, and would have no problem taking down Moon Knight.

Although Marc Spector is himself an accomplished combatant and mercenary, Damian’s pedigree gives him the edge. Even Moon Knight’s enhanced strength wouldn’t be a factor here. As it fluctuates with the phases of the moon, it’s unreliable, and a shrewd combatant like Damian would be sure to capitalize on the weak phase to take him down quickly.

9 Can’t Beat: Spider-Man

When that radioactive spider bit Peter Parker and gave him all its proportionate strength, speed, and reflexes, it created a formidable opponent that many would have trouble defeating. Spider-Man is a seasoned pro in the crime-fighting game, having subdued countless villains at the street and cosmic levels.

Although he can tend to be a tad flippant at times, not taking a battle at hand too seriously, the fact remains that his superior strength, reflexes, and Spider-sense would make it difficult for any Robin to get the drop on him. A few quick exchanges and it’s bird in a web for the Boy Wonder.

8 Can Beat: Hawkeye

Clint Barton is by all accounts, a skilled hand-to-hand combatant, a long-standing member of the Avengers, and the Marvel Universe’s premiere archer. As skilled as he is, he wouldn’t be able to withstand an assault from Tim Drake, a former (Red) Robin. Drake not only learned advanced martial arts, battle tactics, and non-lethal weapons use from Batman, but he was also trained by the deadliest woman in the DC Universe, Lady Shiva. Shiva is skilled enough to defeat even the Dark Knight in a fight, and training under her has given Drake the edge against enemies from the King Snake to the Joker. With her techniques in use, Hawkeye wouldn’t stand a chance.

7 Can’t Beat: Captain America

Aside from the super-soldier formula that gave him meta-human strength, speed, and endurance, Steve Rogers is a combat veteran with experience dating from World War II to the present day.

His enhanced abilities and battle experience, coupled with his never-say-die attitude, was enough to get Batman to concede that Cap could probably take him in a fight, and with that in mind, he would definitely make short work of any Robin. Youth and inexperience would definitely collapse in the face of a battle-tested foe, to say nothing of the advantage Cap’s meta-human abilities would give him.

6 Can Beat: The Punisher

They don’t make them tougher than Frank Castle, aka The Punisher. A former cop and Vietnam veteran, Castle’s war on crime is facilitated by his advanced knowledge of hand-to-hand combat and his extensive collection of weapons and firearms, which he’s used in sending many a criminal to their graves.

Jason Todd, another former Robin and current Red Hood, shares a similar affinity for the methods and materials Frank Castle uses but also benefits from having a more ruthless and tactical mind. Having trained under Batman and Talia Al Ghul, Todd has also honed his physical prowess, merciless streak, and penchant for intricate plotting. Given enough time, Todd would be able to lure the Punisher into a trap where he could finish him off, and even in a direct one-on-one combination, Todd’s superior training and unmerciful nature would give him the upper hand, and the victory.

5 Can't Beat: Deadpool

With his devil-may-care attitude and stream-of-consciousness dialoguing in a fight, everyone’s favorite merc-with-a-mouth might seem like a shoo-in for pushover of the month. However, Deadpool is a highly skilled warrior, whose proficiency in hand-to-hand combat, marksmanship, and swordsmanship are nothing to laugh about.

His skills alone put him on par with any of Batman’s trainees, but when his amped-up healing factor weighs in, you have a combatant who literally cannot be killed in a fight. Sure, Robin might figure out an ingenious way to momentarily halt his advance, but there’d be no stopping Wade Wilson from scoring the ultimate victory in this match.

4 Can Beat: Daredevil

Dick Grayson was the first Robin, the template from which all other sidekicks were designed. Over the years, he has graduated from sidekick to the main hero, taking on the identity of Nightwing. Dick is Bruce’s first and best pupil, learning all he could from the Dark Knight, even stepping in as Batman when Bruce Wayne was incapacitated and presumed dead. Armed with this knowledge, Dick could feasibly defeat Daredevil.

Although the battle would be hard-fought, Dick has learned enough about technique, agility and escape artistry from Bruce to match the Man Without Fear’s heightened senses and equally matched battle experience. Although he’d have more than a few bruises to contend with after, Dick could put Matt to the mat in this contest.

3 Can't Beat: Wolverine

Wolverine Kills Mariko

Arguably the most fierce and determined warrior in the Marvel Universe is the ol’ canucklehead himself, Wolverine. Armed with heightened reflexes and senses, a legendary healing factor and an impervious-to-damage adamantium-laced skeleton and claws, he’d be more than a match for any of the Robins (or Marvel heroes, for that matter) on this list. However, what gives Logan an added edge in any battle is his savagery and ferocity. Much like his diminutive namesake, when Wolverine goes into a berserker rage, nothing in front of him is safe- friend or foe. Robin would simply be unprepared for that level of ferocity from such a super-powered opponent, giving Logan an easy victory.

2 Can Beat: Black Widow

Web of Black Widow 2 feature

In the far-flung future of Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns continuity, Carrie Kelly is Robin, who earned the right to carry on the mantle after saving Batman from certain death. As she gets older, Bruce trains her in everything from hand-to-hand combat to guerrilla warfare tactics, which she then uses to help defeat world-conquering villains such as Lex Luther, Brainiac, and some renegade Kandorians. As Bruce’s right-hand and second-in-command, Carrie has the type of experience that would easily help subdue Natasha Romanoff. Although the Black Widow herself is no stranger to handling world-conquering baddies, she does so as a team member, not a team leader, and it’s that initiative and experience that gives Carrie Kelly the edge in this fight.

1 Can't Beat: Black Panther

Although Robin’s access to the financial and technological resources of Bruce Wayne’s company gives him a formidable edge in preparing for any battle, they pale in comparison to those of the Black Panther. As ruler of Wakanda, King T’Challa has one of the wealthiest and most technologically advanced countries at his disposal, which dwarfs even the mighty Wayne empire. Aside from that, T’Challa is a formidable warrior with mystical and genetically enhanced strength, speed, agility, reflexes, and conditioning that would prove difficult for any enemy to overcome. Also, his vibranium-enhanced suit makes him nearly impervious to damage, ensuring that this panther will be coming back to its throne with a brightly colored bird in its mouth.
