With many fans yet to come down from the high of Matt Reeves' The Batman, it's easy to see why the CW's Gotham Knights came under so much criticism. The trailer teased a campy, low-budget series that made Gotham look cinematic. It focused on Turner (Bruce Wayne's adopted son) working with the kids of the dead Bat's enemies, such as Duela Dent. In addition to the likes of Carrie Kelly (the new Robin), Stephanie Brown (Spoiler) and Harper Row, the teens are going on the lam to solve the mystery of Bruce's death, unlocking their own superhero destinies along the way.

However, while the ambition's there, the execution felt off, teasing a cheesy effort that won't stack up to expectations. The fan backlash to almost all the scenes, plus that awful shot of the Batman mask summed it up -- maybe this was an idea that was better on paper. However, the latest character trailer featuring the Gotham Knights video game's interpretation of Robin shows what the series should have been.

Gotham Knights TV show should have followed Robin from the game

The video showed Tim Drake's Robin doing his part in Gotham after Bruce's death. He's rocking amazing costumes, from sleek, urban hoods Gen Z can connect with, to the ancient designs that feel taken from Damian Wayne's wardrobe. He's also using Justice League tech for short-range teleportation, slingshots with flare bombs, his spinning staff to deflect bullets and even holograms to distract opponents.

In short, this Robin is a one-man wrecking crew who fits well with the other members of the Bat-family such as Nightwing, Jason Todd and Batgirl/Barbara Gordon on missions. The gameplay also showed masterful team-ups, highlighting how well they're doing to upkeep the Dark Knight's legacy, while stymieing villains such as the Court of Owls, Talons, Penguin and Two-Face.

This is the kind of story and enemies the CW should have focused on, shaping a personal arc for the Batfamily after losing their patriarch. As such, Damian would actually have been a powerful character to use, as he'd have been mourning a father who was now setting him off on his career and villains who tried to break the Waynes for ages. Seeing as Damian hasn't been touched on in the Titans TV show, he could have easily fit this narrative, rocking the Tim aesthetic from the game, while using armor to honor the League of Assassins and the al Ghuls. With all these modern weapons in his arsenal, he'd have simply been a better brand than some strange kid no one knows.

Gotham Knights TV show should have followed Robin from the game

This Robin would have been an automatic ratings draw, staving off Talia and Ra's, while wondering if Harvey Dent really is his ally. Such a direction capitalizes way better on the foundation the show has, which would have organically allowed the other teens to fit in instead of the game's senior Bat-members. It would have bought the action, along with the mystery-solving detective scouring Gotham, which feels like a massive upgrade to what fans hated with Turner's Nancy Drew crew.

Viewers simply want the bar raised, not lowered to something substandard. With a better Robin kicking ass in Gotham and living up to the Caped Crusader's mantle, he'd become a symbol Spoiler and Carrie/Robin could look up to and train with. Even the rebellious Harper would realize this Robin is the leader they ought to follow, covering the same isolated, angsty beat as Robin tries to keep his dad's vision going.

It also would have subverted DC's Damian-led Teen Titans, making his Knights a natural offshoot, while having such a fierce warrior as the Boy Wonder realizing, with this army, he has to be careful not to kill. Ultimately, he would have weapons to easily break the Bat's one-rule, which would have made the TV journey even better as the violent Robin struggled to stay in the light he found with his new family.
