Perry Mason is returning to television this summer, with a gritty reboot produced by Robert Downey, Jr. for HBO.

After an initial tease by Downey, Jr. himself earlier this week, HBO has released the first official teaser trailer for the upcoming series, along with the premiere date of June 21. The Americans' star Matthew Rhys takes center stage as the hard-boiled criminal defense lawyer, asked to personally investigate a murder mystery that has rocked 1930s Los Angeles to its core.

As Mason moves deeper into the sordid criminal underworld of the City of Angels, murder, mayhem and systematic abuse of power is showcased as the lawyer puts his very life on the line to solve a case beyond the corrupt law enforcement of the time.

Downey, Jr. had originally been attached to star as the title character before opting to drop out and produce the series alongside his wife Susan Downey through their production company Team Downey. The television show adapts the pulp novel series by Erle Stanley Garner, which was first adapted to television in 1957.

Starring Matthew Rhys, Tatiana Maslany and John Lithgow, Perry Mason is scheduled to premiere on June 21 on HBO.
