The film rights to Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld's Image Comics character Prophet have been picked up by Studio 8, The Wrap reports.

Prophet is a DNA-enhanced super soldier who was put in a cyrogenic sleep for a special mission, only to wake up in the wrong time: our present. The character is, as the report states, "pitched as very much the anti-Captain America across the board" and -- instead of being an All-American superhero -- he's "a ruthless berserker that must find his humanity."

Studio 8 hopes to create a franchise around Prophet. Leifeld, Hitman franchise producer Adrian Askarieh and Out of the Furnace and Run All Night producer Brooklyn Weaver will spearhead the project. Studio 8 also has the rights to bring Kwanza Osajyefo and Tim Smith 3's socio-political comic Black to the big screen.

Leifeld has helped create over 150 comic book characters, including the X-Men offshoot team X-Force, which will get its own film from Fox. The upcoming X-Force film will be written and directed by Drew Goddard. Leifeld also had a hand in creating Cable, Domino and Shatterstar, who appeared in Deadpool 2 as played by Josh Brolin, Zazie Beetz and Lewis Tan respectively.

Studio 8's upcoming Prophet film does not yet have a release date.
