Jake Gyllenhaal will star in Road House, a remake of Patrick Swayze's 1989 cult action film.

Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) will direct the Amazon Studios production, which also stars Billy Magnussen (No Time to Die, The Many Saints of Newark), Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad), Gbemisola Ikumelo (A League of Their Own) and Lukas Gage (Euphoria, The White Lotus).

“I’m thrilled to put my own spin on the beloved Road House legacy,” Liman said in a statement. “And I can’t wait to show audiences what Jake and I are going to do with this iconic role.”

The Legacy of Patrick Swayze's Road House

The original Road House starred Swayze as James Dalton, a bouncer at a roadside bar who comes into conflict with a corrupt businessman who seeks to tighten his grip on a small town in Missouri. Critically panned, and only a moderate box-office success, Road House nevertheless attracted a devoted following over the years. The 1989 film was released by MGM, which was acquired by Amazon last year for $8.45 billion.

The film also inspired a 2006 direct-to-video sequel starring Johnathon Schaech as Dalton's son, and a 2003 Off-Broadway musical comedy titled (deep breath) Road House: The Stage Version Of The Cinema Classic That Starred Patrick Swayze, Except This One Stars Taimak From The 80's Cult Classic "The Last Dragon" Wearing A Blonde Mullet Wig.

The Amazon Studios remake tweaks the lead character -- he's now a former UFC fighter -- and moves the setting from the Midwest to the Florida Keys, where "not everything is what it seems."

Joel Silver, who produced the 1989 original for MGM, returns for Amazon's reimagining, written by Anthony Bagarozzi (The Nice Guys) and Charles Mondry.

“The original Road House has a special place in my heart, and I am so excited to bring this newly imagined version to audiences around the world,” Silver said in a statement. “Doug and I have each made some big, boisterous action movies and are ready to bring everything we have to this one.”

The cast of Road House is rounded out by Hannah Love Lanier, Travis Van Winkle, B.K. Cannon, Arturo Castro, Dominique Columbus, Beau Knapp and Bob Meneryt. Production is expected to begin later this month in the Dominican Republic.

Road House will be released on Prime Video.
