Season 4 of Riverdale was forced to end a full three episodes early due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, leaving the mystery of the videotape murderer unsolved. It was previously announced that Season 5 will begin with the main cast experiencing their final days at Riverdale High. Season 5's official synopsis reads,

"Season five of RIVERDALE will begin with our characters’ final days as students at Riverdale High. From an epic Senior Prom to a bittersweet Graduation, there are a lot of emotional moments and goodbyes yet to come—with some couples breaking up, as everyone goes their separate ways to college—or elsewhere. Then, we will redock with our gang as young adults, all returning to Riverdale to escape their troubled pasts. And life—and romance—will only be more complicated now that they’re in their twenties…"

Photos recently released ahead of the Season 5 premiere showed the gang sharing a toast at Riverdale High's senior prom. Skeet Ulrich (F.P. Jones) and Marisol Nichols (Hermione Lodge) announced in October that they will exit the series early in the season.

Riverdale stars K.J. Apa as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom, Casey Cott as Kevin Keller, Mark Consuelos as Hiram Lodge, Charles Melton as Reggie Mantle, Vanessa Morgan as Toni Topaz, Mädchen Amick as Alice Cooper and Erinn Westbrook as Tabitha Tate. The series returns for Season 5 on Jan. 20 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
