Riverdale star Vanessa Morgan, who plays Toni Topaz on The CW series, called out the show's handling of its black characters on social media.

"I'm not being [Quiet] anymore," Morgan wrote on Twitter, with the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter. She attached an image with a longer message that reads, "Tired of how black people are portrayed in Media, tired of us being portrayed as thugs, dangerous or angry, scary people. Tired of us also being used as sidekick, non-dimensional characters to our white leads. Or only used in the ads for diversity but not actually in the show. It starts with the media. I'm not being [quiet] anymore."

"My role on Riverdale has nothing to do with my fellow castmates/friends. They don't write the show. So no need to attack them, they don't call the shots & I know they have my back," she added in a followup Tweet.

"Don't even get me started with how Riverdale treated the Pussycats," former Melody Valentine actor Asha Bromfield replied. "We had so much more to contribute than standing in the background and adding sass to a storyline."

Morgan joined Riverdale in Season 2 as Toni, a bisexual member of the Southside Serpents. Jughead became friends with her when he transferred to Southside High, and she joined his gang after he took over as leader. Over time, she got close to Cheryl Blossom, and the two entered a romantic relationship. Since then, many of her subplots have revolved around Toni's relationship with Cheryl. She is expected to return for Season 5.

Toni is one of only a handful of black characters to appear on the series. Josie Campbell's band, Josie and the Pussycats, was comprised of all black women, but Bromfield's Melody and Valerie Brown (Hayley Law) left the show in Season 2. Josie herself followed in Season 4, to join Riverdale spinoff Katy Keene. Sierra McCoy, Principal Weatherbee, Munroe "Mad Dog" Moore and Chuck Clayton are also black characters who appear in a regular, if limited, capacity on the show.

Riverdale stars KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, Cole Sprouse, Madelaine Petsch, Casey Cott, Vanessa Morgan, Mark Consuelos, Skeet Ulrich, Marisol Nichols and Madchen Amick. The series returns for Season 5 in January 2021 on The CW.
