WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 5, Episode 4 of Riverdale, "Chapter Eighty: Purgatorio," which aired Wednesday on The CW.

At the end of the most recent episode of Riverdale, viewers were teased with the arrival of a new serial killer in the famed hometown of Archie Andrews. A young woman nicknamed Squeaky got onto an ominous-looking truck that had picked her up, just as Archie reunited with his friends after seven years. Recently, series creator and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa also teased a "possibly tragic fate" for a major character who has been on the show since its first season.

While speaking to TVLine, Aguirre-Sacasa was asked if the aforesaid serial killer was a mystery that would be featured this season.

"Definitely," Aguirre-Sacasa replied. "That is one hundred percent. I think it’s in the next episode that you’ll see that mystery is really entwined with the possibly tragic fate of one of our major characters that we’ve known since Season 1."

This isn't the first time Aguirre-Sacasa has insinuated a bad fate coming for a major Riverdale character. He had previously teased the death of Archie in Season 5 and later revealed a creepy poster for said season with a caption reading, "Nothing stays buried forever," possibly teasing the return of a supposedly dead character.

Riverdale stars K.J. Apa as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom, Casey Cott as Kevin Keller, Mark Consuelos as Hiram Lodge, Charles Melton as Reggie Mantle, Vanessa Morgan as Toni Topaz, Mädchen Amick as Alice Cooper and Erinn Westbrook as Tabitha Tate. New episodes of Season 5 air Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
