After being forced to temporarily cease production earlier this year due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Riverdale is set to resume work on its upcoming fifth season. To celebrate, series creator and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa announced the start of the season's production with an eerie piece of key art.Shared by Aguirre-Sacasa on Twitter, the art sees a terrified Betty being chased into town by a truck. At the top of the image is the Riverdale logo, with the "v" in the title colored yellow and the word "season" above it, signifying Season 5 of the CW show. "At long last, the offices are open and we are in pre-production on Season 5 of [Riverdale]!!" Aguirre-Sacasa tweeted.
Aguirre-Sacasa also revealed earlier this year that Season 5 of Riverdale is planned to feature a massive time jump after the first three episodes. Additionally, the season will also see the main characters -- Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica -- heading off to college before eventually coming back to Riverdale by circumstance.
Season five of RIVERDALE will begin with our charactersâ final days as students at Riverdale High. From an epic Senior Prom to a bittersweet Graduation, there are a lot of emotional moments and goodbyes yet to comeâwith some couples breaking up, as everyone goes their separate ways to collegeâor elsewhere. Then, we will redock with our gang as young adults, all returning to Riverdale to escape their troubled pasts. And lifeâand romanceâwill only be more complicated now that theyâre in their twentiesâ¦
Riverdale stars KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, Cole Sprouse, Madelaine Petsch, Casey Cott, Vanessa Morgan, Mark Consuelos, Marisol Nichols and Madchen Amick. The series returns for Season 5 in January 2021 on The CW.
