Riverdale, the hit CW reimagining of the Archie comics, has been making deep cut references to the source material since the very beginning. We’ve seen fairly obscure characters from the comics transformed into some of the most interesting characters on the show (looking at you, Toni). However, two characters who have been surprisingly absent from the series up to this point are about to make their first appearance in the show, as Jughead’s mother and younger sister Jellybean have been confirmed to appear in the upcoming third season.
The cast of the series sat down with Kelly Ripa for a panel at Comic-Con International San Diego this morning. Among other things, the cast spoke about their feelings on the current arc of the show. They also spoke about what excites them the most for Season 3. While a lot of future conflicts were hinted at throughout the panel, two upcoming characters were casually revealed to be coming to town.
The tidbit was revealed by the actor who plays Jughead Jones, Cole Sprouse. Sprouse confirmed that Jughead’s mother and sister will return to Riverdale for at least an episode this season. He expects them to appear in either the eighth or ninth episode.
Jughead’s mother, Gladys Jones, first appeared in 1948. The wholesome older stories often showed Gladys being mostly occupied with making her lazy son more active. His younger sister, nicknamed Jellybean, first appeared in a 1980s story meant to shake up the Jughead comics. She’s been a little girl ever since, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see her aged up slightly for the television show.
Coming off the second season finale, the teenagers of Riverdale have a whole new mess of problems. Archie Andrews has been taken to jail for a crime he didn't commit; Riverdale straight up has a Legion of Doom now, led by Hiram Lodge; Polly Cooper has drawn her mother even farther into the cult-like belief system learned at the “Farm”; And apparently, “the peace” that’s risen between the gangs in town is about to explode. Having the mother and daughter show up in town will inevitably cause some unintended chaos for Riverdale because everything causes unintended chaos in Riverdale.
Returning Wednesday, Oct. 10, ET/PT on The CW, Riverdale stars KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, Cole Sprouse, Madeleine Petsch, Ashleigh Miller, Casey Cott, Mark Consuelos, Skeet Ulrich, Marisol Nichols, Madchen Amick and Luke Perry.
