The long-desired appearance of Sabrina Spellman in Riverdale brings a burning question: How? The title character from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina met her demise in the final episode of its run on Netflix.

No worries, says portrayer Kiernan Shipka, who told TVLine that the teenage witch isn't done with living life. "It's very unlike Sabrina to just kind of chill in the Sweet Hereafter. I think she would get bored and want to find her way back to her friends and her family, and vice versa," Shipka said. "Her aunties and her friends and Ambrose would do anything for her, so to me, it makes sense that her death wasn’t a forever death."

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was always meant as a spinoff from The CW's Riverdale, as both shows are based on Archie Comics characters. But Chilling Adventures of Sabrina instead went to Netflix, which carried it for 36 episodes from 2018 to 2020. Shipka starred as Sabrina, initially believed to be the daughter of a warlock and a human. She tried to live as a typical high school student but was caught in the struggle to protect her family and friends from forces seeking to pull her fully into being a witch in service to the Dark Lord.

The show took a more dramatic and macabre tone than the coming-of-age comedy Sabrina the Teenage Witch, which starred Melissa Joan Hart and aired on ABC from 1996 to 2003, and even more so than the comics title Sabrina the Teenage Witch or its animated TV incarnation from 1970.

In the final run of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, she tried to save her hometown of Greendale from Eldritch Terrors, which work on behalf of The Void, which had the potential to consume the universe. However, Sabrina's bid to trap The Void in Pandora's Box rescued everyone she cared about -- but she herself, and her duplicate, Sabrina Morningstar, died before all was complete. Sabrina and love interest Nick were united in the Sweet Hereafter at the episode's end.

Sabrina's appearance on Riverdale continues the five-part "Rivervale" storyline, which explores the differences in an alternate-universe version of the town. As Bailey's Comet flies over Riverdale, Sabrina comes to visit at the request of Cheryl Blossom, who with her Nana Rose is looking back over the tragedies women in the Blossom family have suffered throughout history.

Riverdale Season 6, Episode 4, "Chapter Ninety-Nine: The Witching Hour(s)," will air Dec. 7 on The CW.
