A release posted to the official Archie Comics website has revealed that the company's hit CW series Riverdale will pay homage to the '80s teen black comedy film Heathers in Season 3's upcoming musical episode.

The episode, which is set to air on Wednesday, March 20, will mark Riverdale's second time honoring an iconic teen film in musical format, the first being the Season 2 episode "Chapter Thirty-One: A Night to Remember," which was based on Stephen King's Carrie.

For the uninitiated, Heathers was released in the United States in 1989 and starred Winona Ryder and  Christian Slater. The film revolves around Ohio's Westerberg High School being under the thumb of a trio of popular girls, each named Heather. Misfit Veronica Sawyer (Ryder) rejects the Heathers in favor of her new boyfriend J.D. (Slater), who plans to end the Heathers' reign of terror by killing them.

"Last year, we had a blast doing Carrie. This year, we wanted to honor another iconic teen movie. Heathers: The Musical is big fun, with great roles for the Riverdale kids," executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said. "And everyone is singing..."

Aguirre-Sacasa's last comment is very likely addressing the fact that in Season 2's musical episode, Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) was noticeably one of the only major characters not to sing.

Archie Comics' release also provides a teaser image that reveals the casting list for Riverdale High's production of Heathers: The Musical.

The titular Heathers will be portrayed by Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart). Meanwhile, Veronica Sawyer and J.D. will be played by Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) and Sweet Pea (Jordan Connor), respectively.

Additionally, the casting sheet reveals that Kevin Keller (Casey Cott) will once again be directing and that the production is being sponsored by the mysterious Farm.
