Riverdale and Diary of a Wimpy Kid star Ryan Grantham recently pled guilty to second degree murder and plotting to kill Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The actor began his sentencing hearing in the British Columbia Supreme Court, who will determine the sentence. It's worth noting second-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence. Grantham pled guilty to murdering his mother, Barbara Anne Waite, in 2020. According to reports, Grantham rehearsed the murder and filmed himself. He also filmed himself after the murder on a GoPro, confessing to the crime and showing his mother's body.

Afterward, Grantham allegedly prepared three guns, along with ammunition and Molotov cocktails, camping supplies, and directions to Trudeau's home printed from Google Maps. Though Grantham himself admitted to police that he originally intended to murder the Prime Minister, he instead turned himself in.

The prosecution reportedly looked at two psychiatric reports detailing the motivation behind Grantham's actions. He was reportedly experiencing an "intense period of clinical depression" and murdered his mother, who was battling cancer, in order "to spare her from seeing the violence he intended to commit."

Grantham was reportedly "experiencing urges to commit violence and kill himself." He reportedly shot his mother in the back of the head while she was playing the piano. Grantham evidently went out to buy beer and marijuana before going to bed. Crown prosecutor Michaela Donnelly asserted Grantham was also worried his mother would find out about his poor performance at school and his use of marijuana.

Grantham has a sister, Lisa Grantham, who discovered the body of her mother on April 1 after she was unable to reach Barbara or Ryan. In a statement read to the court, Lisa said, "It breaks my heart she struggled so hard … only to be murdered by her own son... She was vulnerable and Ryan gave her no chance to defend herself. It pains me to know he was a danger to her life."

In addition to the murder of Grantham's mother and the assassination of Trudeau, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Kathleen Ker also heard Grantham considered mass killings at locations including his former school, Simon Fraser University.

Grantham was a child actor who appeared in the CW's Riverdale, Supernatural and iZombie. Film credits include a minor role in 2010's Diary of a Wimpy Kid and a vocal appearance in the direct-to-DVD movie, Marley & Me: The Puppy Years.
