"Riverdale" Debuts First Official Image

With the unveiling of The CW's 2016-2017 schedule comes the first official image for "Riverdale," the midseason drama inspired by Archie Comics.

The project has drawn repeated comparisons to "Twin Peaks" from the moment it was announced -- and most recently by star Camila Mendes, who plays Veronica -- and this image goes far to underscore those Lynchian qualities.

Here the bright, optimistic hometown of Archie Andrews is shrouded in fog, and mystery, as a ghostly boat floats in the foreground. Whether the image ties into the tragedy described in the new series synopsis, or it's merely setting the mood, remains to be seen.

"It's different," Mendes told EW.com. "It's not the Riverdale you know."

Executive produced by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Greg Berlanti, "Riverdale" also stars K.J. Apa, Cole Sprouse, Lili Reinhart, Madelaine Petsch, Ashleigh Murray, Luke Perry, Mädchen Amick, Marisol Nichols, Ross Butler, Cody Kearsley, Casey Cott and more. The series premieres at midseason on The CW.
