Season 3 of Riverdale is only a few short months away. While we know next to nothing about the third season of the Archie Comics-based series, a teaser trailer did hint at the fact that Riverdale will once again introduce a dark and unsettling new mystery, one that may or may not revolve around a strange, cult-like family and their mysterious newborns.

Back when Season 2 was still airing, it was announced that series showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa was developing a dark Sabrina the Teenage Witch-focused spin-off for the CW. However, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina later moved to Netflix, with a 2-season order already in place. The two series may not be on the same network, but Sacasa is still at the helm of both. And now, it appears he might have to juggle a third.

Deadline reports that, while speaking at the CW's Television Critics Association executive session, the network's president, Mark Pedowitz, confirmed that they were considering a third Riverdale spin-off. "In terms of (new) spinoffs out of Riverdale, I’m waiting to hear what Roberto has in mind," Pedowitz said. "He has something in mind."

It seems that Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa already has an idea of what this potential third series could be. With the horror overtones that both of his Archie Comics-based television series carry, it's a safe assumption that the showrunner might be delving in the same realm. After all, the writer's comic book, Afterlife With Archie, is what ultimately led to the dark direction of Riverdale -- and the same can be said of the comic book's spin-off, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

After both comics were received to fan and critical acclaim, Archie Comics launched a new imprint: Archie Horror. Under this banner, various horror-based Archie stories have been unfolding, such as Jughead: The Hunger, which features Jughead Jones as a werewolf, and Vampironica, which fittingly stars Veronica Lodge as a vampire. Either of these comics could work as a potential third spin-off series. But then again, perhaps Sacasa also has something else -- something completely different -- planned for this third series. We'll just have to wait to see what the showrunner has cooked up next for his dark take on the Archie universe.
