WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, in theaters now.

Director and co-writer J.J. Abrams teased earlier this month that fans of Ahsoka Tano, one of the protagonists of the animated Clone Wars, will want to "watch closely" during Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. However, listen is more accurate, as Ashley Eckstein reprises her role for one of the film's numerous voice cameos.

The moment comes on Exegol, Palpatine's headquarters, when Rey (Daisy Ridley) is lying on the group, about to die, and hears the voices from past Jedi, including Luke Skywalker, Qui-gon Jinn, Obi-wan Kenobi, Kanan Jarrus and, yes, Ahsoka. Although the encouragement helps Rey to gather her strength, the implication for Ahsoka fans is dire -- because every Jedi who spoke to Rey was already dead.

Ahsoka was the only one who hadn't died on-screen -- well, at least not permanently. She briefly died on The Clone Wars in 20 BBY, on a planet that looked eerily similar to Exegol, inhabited by avatars of the Force: the Father, the Daughter and the Son. But considering Anakin Skywalker and the Daughter swiftly resurrected her, and she went on to live at least until 1 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin), it shouldn't really count as a proper death.

Anakin's padawan, Ahsoka was introduced on The Clone Wars as a teenage Togruta as headstrong as her master, and twice as likely to disobey. That attitude put her in the crossfire of the Jedi Council, who took away her padawan beads and expelled her from the Order. Ahsoka returned on the animated Star Wars Rebels, where she took the mantle of master to Ezra Bridger and confronted Darth Vader in what looked, at the time, like a duel to the death. In a later episode, Ezra was able to enter the World Between Worlds to pull her out of danger just as Vader was about to strike her down.

Ahsoka was born in 36 BBY, and, therefore, would have been 72 years old at the time of The Rise of Skywalker. But the obvious implication is that she died sometime after the Battle of Endor, in 4 ABY (After the Battle of Yavin), as depicted in the finale of Star Wars Rebels. That leaves a gap of 36 years in which she could have died, although the event has never been mentioned or hinted at in any Star Wars media.

Rebels' fourth and final season wrapped in 2018, but the seventh and final season of The Clone Wars will premiere in Disney + in February 2020. The Clone Wars will keep the same nonlinear structure as previous seasons, so there's a chance it will deal with Ahsoka becoming one with the Force, or that it will at least explain why Rey could hear her voice in The Rise of Skywalker.

Directed and co-written by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Keri Russell, Anthony Daniels, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams, and Carrie Fisher, with Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant.
