SPOILER WARNING: Major spoilers from "Last Refuge," tonight's episode of The CW's "DC's Legends of Tomorrow," follow. At publication, the episode has yet to air on the west coast.

It appears that, as the first season is about to hit its final episodes, "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" is gradually revealing more and more about its protagonist, the renegade Time Master Rip Hunter. Last week, we discovered that he met his wife in the Old West and was friends with Jonah Hex; this week, we learn about another important loved one in his life: his mother.

When the Time Masters' personal assassin, The Pilgrim (Faye Kingslee), attempts to kill past incarnations of each of the Legends -- she goes after several of them while they're still children -- the team manages to rescue their younger selves one by one. However, they'll need a safe refuge that's off the historical grid, so Rip takes them to the English countryside to live with his mom. The Hunter Matriarch comes off as an older, sci-fi version of Wendy Darling, having taken in several orphans over the years (including Rip) and trained them to be Time Masters.

As the episode progresses, it becomes clear that, like many motherly figures in the comic-book world, she's a mixture of sweetness and toughness. At one moment, she bakes Rip a platter of mince pies for his continued journey, but also has no problem making some extremely difficult, somewhat ruthless decisions for the good of the team later on. Read more about it in our full recap later tonight.
