Whenever someone makes a spinoff or an adaptation of a famous property, there's always risk involved. The goal is to recapture whatever magic the original property had, but that can be difficult to do -- and fandoms can be hard to please. For instance, there's a faction of fans who still don't like Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Game of Thrones fans are already wondering whether House of the Dragon will be able to recapture its precursor's glory.

The same questions have haunted The Rings of Power ever since it was announced as a Prime Video series. After The Hobbit trilogy flopped, Lord of the Rings fans have been keeping up with The Rings of Power's marketing material with intense scrutiny. What they found wasn't up to snuff, and many fans were convinced that the series was bound to be a failure. However, a lot of that negativity has subsided after The Rings of Power's latest trailer.

A week ahead of its massive plans for the San Diego Comic-Con, The Rings of Power dropped a full teaser, and it was spectacular. There was a lot of new footage that focused on panorama shots and the many, new locations. There were also some to close-up character introductions, some dialogue and shots of the various races of Middle-earth. Most importantly, though, the trailer embraced LOTR lore in a number of ways and hinted that extensive flashbacks could be a part of the series.

Honestly, the trailer looked great, and fans over on Reddit took note. User jack_rodg simply wrote, " OK, I'm sorry, but this looks amazing." That wasn't all, though, because almost the entire thread was marked by positivity. User bobparr1212 was especially excited about the callbacks to the First Age: "I loved everything I saw. Elves look great, Dwarves are fantastic, THE TREES! Was that the kinslaying? Are we gonna see the oath? I just can’t wait at this point."

It was weird to see such a dramatic change in tone amongst the LOTR fandom. Before the teaser, there was only cautious optimism at best, but after the teaser fans are actually excited. Reddit user asamulya summed up the change in tone: "I won’t be a hypocrite, I was worried too and this trailer has done a lot to alleviate that." So, it seems like it was the teaser that changed fans' minds. Now, it looks like most of the fandom will be approaching The Rings of Power hoping for the best, rather than dreading the worst.

Granted, there are still some notable hang-ups with the series. Because of its condensed timeline, some stories will probably be skipped or shortened. There's also still the question of LOTR lore. While the trailer embraced a lot of LOTR elements, there are still problems that fans won't like. Chief among those issues are the Disa's missing beard and the inclusion of two Durins. Hopefully, those will only be isolated canon-breakers, rather than a trend that the series follows. If that's the case, then The Rings of Power still has a chance at success. After all, Peter Jackson's trilogy altered Tolkien's work a number of times and did so effectively. With any luck, The Rings of Power will end up as a success, and the LOTR fans' new-found optimism will be rewarded.
