Filmmaker Ridley Scott, who directed Robin Hood, Kingdom of Heaven and the Oscar-winning Gladiator, returns once more to the far-flung past with Exodus: Gods and Kings, an epic retelling of the story of Moses.

As the first trailer reveals, this isn't some update of The Ten Commandments, but rather an action-packed swords-and-sandals films that's heavy on sword fights and light on fake beards. (But, really, did we expect anything else?)

Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton, who star as Moses and his adoptive brother Ramses, also received their own character posters (below), courtesy of Yahoo! Movies.

Scott must have enjoyed his experience on the film, as Variety reports he's teaming with screenwriter for David, which is expected to focus on the reign of King David. At this point it's unclear of Scott will direct or just produce through his Scott Free Banner with Fox and Chernin Entertainment.

Opening Dec. 12, Exodus: Gods and Kings also stars Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley, John Turturro and Aaron Paul.
